Take Ninagawa is pleased to present a joint exhibition by pioneering avant-garde
filmmaker Jonas Mekas (1922–2019) and gallery artist Gozo Yoshimasu (b. 1939),
one of Japan’s leading poets and multimedia artists.
Mekas and Yoshimasu were friends and collaborators who made appearances in each
other’s films and texts. This exhibition explores the pair’s creative relationship by
presenting works by the two in dialogue with each other.
These include Mekas’s On My Way to Fujiyama I Saw… (1996), captured on 16mm
film, which documents Mekas’s travels in Japan with Yoshimasu, and Yoshimasu’s
Momentary Ecriture (1999–2000), a series of Polaroid snapshots inscribed on their
back sides with the artist’s written description of each scene at the moment of its
capture. Taken together, their works present complementary views of two masters of
a diaristic form that is open to poetry and chance occurrences.
